The 19th Wife Book Review

Explore the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in The 19th Wife, a sweeping work of historical fiction. A murder has taken place among the Firsts, a group that still practices polygamy and exists separately from the Mormon faith. Jordon Scott's mother is arrested for the murder of his father, but Jordan believes that his mother has been wrongly accused. This tale switches viewpoints and time periods, simultaneously following the present day murder investigation and the story of Ann Eliza Young, Brigham Young's 19th wife in the mid to late 1800s. Author David Ebershoff eloquently shows the moral conundrum facing the faithful: adhere to the Prophet's doctrine of polygamy that ensures entry into Heaven, or follow the law of the United States. The answer is not as black and white as it seems for the characters in The 19th Wife.
